Under the leadership of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr., the administration’s eight-point socioeconomic agenda, encapsulated in the nation’s “Build Better More” initiative (formerly known as the “Build, Build, Build” program), underscores a commitment to substantial investments in mass transportation systems, particularly railways. The “Build Better More” program is slated to receive significant funding from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) with an estimated allocation of USD 3.79 billion in the 2024 budget.
Aligned with the Philippines developmental aspirations, the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 emphasizes targeted investments to address critical needs. President Bongbong Marcos emphasized the pivotal role of transportation policy in fostering sustainable economic growth, advocating for increased funding for the DOTr starting in 2023.
A substantial portion, approximately 76.4%, of the DOTr budget is earmarked for the Rail Transport Program, aimed at constructing and modernizing railway infrastructure. Noteworthy projects include the North-South Commuter Railway System, Metro Manila Subway Project Phase I, LRT Line 1 Cavite Extension Project, Philippine National Railways South Long Haul Project and MRT 3 Rehabilitation Project, all set to benefit from this strategic investment.
